How to bring a 1970 merc 65 hp out of storage?

I'm looking at a 1970 Merc 65 hp thunderbolt that's last run about four years ago and been in stoage for probably four years prior.

Any tips, concerns, or basin HELP would be appreciated.

Asking $600.00 Thoughts on buying? Am I looking at a really bad deal or the luck of the draw?

You didn't mention the compression #'s for each cylinder, whether it made good spark on each plug, what the lower unit oil looked like, or whether it was demonstrated to run or not. If a motor that old can't be demostrated to run at LEAST on muffs, then there's no way it's worth $600 in my book. I bought a '75 650 recently. It needed the carbs. cleaned, a new rectifier, and new battery wires and choke wire replaced. I should have replaced the impeller but I had an idea it had been replaced recently or I would have done that. Your motor may need similar treatment if you get it.

I always like to squirt some oil in the cylinders BEFORE turning a motor over if it has been sitting a long time.


Also another tip is to put a new water pump impeller in the engine BEFORE trying to start it...even for the first time....even for just a little bit. Just pop one in there they are cheap and it's quick and easy to do.
