I have a 1987 Evinrude XP 200. I was told the best thing I could do would be disable the VRO before it stops working. The boat has been sitting for a couple of years. It has a new stator, rectifier, wiring harness, powerpacks. Cranked it up today and it ran but would not slow idle. It did not smoke hardly at all and was concerned that it might not be pumping oil. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, the purpose of a VRO is that it will add less oil when the engine doesn't need as much, so you probably would see less smoke at idle.

All you need to do to disable the VRO is to plug the oil line going into the pump and disconnect the wires.

If the engine struggles to idle well, could be that there is a fuel restriction in the idle passages in the carbs. You may need to tear them down and clean those passages thoroughly.

does the warning horn work? is there oil in the tank? test to make sure that the warning horn is working

sounds like a carb rebuild is in order.

i would just go ahead and disable the vro there are tons of post on here and most likely any questions you have are answered in. but its pretty straight forward. if you dont want to cut the wires just plug where the oil line comes through your engine cowling. I filled my vro tank with water to keep the alarm quiet for low oil level. just in case i decide some day to buy new vro pumps.
