How to change engine oil

I don't change my engine oil often because it is too difficult. I do have a oil vacuum apparatus I can drop a hose down the dip stick port but I just don't do that. I also don't like dropping oil into the well and catching it at the drain in the rear of the boat. Can't get anything beneath the engine itself. I don't run the boat often so the oil does not get a lot of time on it.
Are there any other options?

Thanks

Why not? I do and it works fine and very little mess.

Re: How to change engine oil

the oil has to come out the oil pan drain plug, or out the dipstick tube,

I suck the oil out the dipstick with no difficulty or mess. Just run your engine on the muffs and warm up the oil. Mine comes up in 10 or 15 minutes...

No need to stick a hose down the dipstick tube, the tube goes to the bottom of the pan and is designed for pulling the oil out. You can either use the threaded top to hook a garden hose fitting to, or I just push a tight fitting hose over the top of dipstick tube.
You also need to run the engine and warm the oil, then it will suck out the dipstick tube very quickly.

I take a gal ice cream bucket and put under the drain plug and after its drained put the lid on and pull out with no mess, I might be one of the lucky ones with a 120 but this works for me, filter get a little messy

Merc sell a pump designed to just thread up on the top of the dipstick and suck the oil out.

The number of hours on the oil is almost not relevant. The time in the oil pan is. If you haven't changed it in 12 months, you should. If the engine's not being run that much, when it is there is a lot more metal being deposited in the oil, and you need to get that out. Also acids in the oil from combustion bypass degrade the additives in the oil....

Yep.......time, not engine hours, is the enemy of boat engine oil. Just rig up a piece of tubing to the dipstick tube, and suck it out after running the engine on muffs for 10-15 mins to warm it all up nice.

I bought a drain tube you pull out the bilge drain prior to draining and it works great. I also have a 10qt oil pan and run a dry sump oil pan. Regardles, warm it up 1st and bring an extra roll of paper towles and a handy trash bag to put them in. motor3.jpg

I was not aware that the oil dip tube actualy went to the bottom, I thought a small portion of it stuck down past it. I have run my engine in the past and checked the oil level. The oil on the stick had not spread out on the stick, was still just there.

When you buy boats, or cars, there are only a limited number of options on doing anything, even changeing oil. with oil changes on a boat there are actualy 3 options. first is drain through the oil pan plug. some catch it, others run it into the bildge and mop it up, .... second, use the vaccum pump and draw it up and out through the dip stick. this was the intended method as most engines have a threaded fitting on the dip stick. the third and esiest method is the simplest, PAY YOUR BOAT MECHANIC TO DO IT FOR YOU.........

PCM, is this something that I can pull out when I want to drain the oil, push back in to lock closed when finished? Had one on my mower, it always leaked a little. Then got to connect a hose and push it through the drain hole of the boat, I think the suction would work easiest which I plan to start today!

Well I used my oil vac and removed the engine oil today, worked very well. Don't know how much oil is left in the pan.
The hose slipped tightly into the dip stick pipe and worked great, did a lot of pumping though.

Re: How to change engine oil

Just a note, most of the oil must have been removed, I let her re-settle for overnight and sucked all that would settle down after running her.
I used a 5 Gal oil jug, used all but maybe 1/2 qt or so to fill back up to the full line. I did not realize how dirty the old oil was till I saw the new oil on the stick and saw the old oil being poured out of the container!!

Thanks for everything..
