50ESL72C...this is the hydro-eclectric shift, so, how hard is it to change the impeller? I have heard bad stories about the wires that go into the lower unit being compromised while seperating the lower unit from the rest of the motor. I don't want to mess this up because the hydro-electric system is working fine.

Tie a long string on the shift wires before pulling them down, then use the string to pull the wires back up when reassembling.

I haven't taken anything apart yet, I am too uneducated at this point and of course afraid...from where should I have the other end of the string to pull the wires back up? after I unbolt the foot how far should I pull it down along with the wires?

Under the hood beside the head you will see a blue wire and a green wire, those are your shift wires. you need to get the top of the shaft expose to get the new impeller on and slide it down.

Yep. That's why you tie the string to them so you can pull them back up through the midsection.
