How to change lower unit oil?

I have a yamaha 90hp from 88 I belive. How do I change the lower unit oil and what oil should I use.<br /><br />Thanks

there is a vent cap and a drain open both and drain oil<br />the oil has to be filled from the bottom up as to remove any air<br />when the oil comes out of the vent hole put the plug back in the vent and then replace the drain plug<br />the oil i use is quicksilver and miy motor takes 2 tubes <br />hopes this helps

jls02, If you plan on doing much of the service to this motor, you owe it to yourself to get a hold of an Yamaha service manual. It will pay for itself many times over if you wrench on this motor yourself. <br /><br />Dave

Invest in a cheap lower unit oil pump like this one:<br />

<br /><br />Those sell for less than $10 up here, and make pumping lube in from the bottom much cleaner and easier. You only need to use those squeeze tubes a couple times before it gets old.<br /><br />Replace the gaskets behind the fill/drain screws with new ones. You can get them from your dealer for a few cents each. Much cheaper than new gears & bearings.
