How to Change Water Pump on 25 Hp Evinrude

I have a 25Hp Evinrude 1996, I am having problems dropping the lowerunit down. I took out all the bolts holding it. It moves about 1/2 inch down. Now I just found a rod and a screw on the rod inside the gap where the ear muffs attach when you flush the engine. Do I need to unscrew this one to make it drop. What manuals Can I read also.<br />thanks

Tallafish--read the other posts on this board about water pump impellers and lower unit removals. Get a Seloc or Clymer manual for your year motor. The shift rod is split and held together by a clamp with screws in it which becomes visible when you drop the lower unit. The lower portion of the rod needs to be released from the upper portion. If you are doing this without a manual, be careful with the water tube when you drop the rest of your lower unit, and also when you re-attach it. And don't forget to re-attach your shift rod.
