19' I/O. I am replacing the back 8 ft. of floor. Some stringer rot, but only about two board sections, not too much work. What I can't see is the transom wood as it is glassed in. How do I know if it's OK or not? I tried knocking around with my fist, but I couldn't tell much with that method.

Do I drill into it from inside and see what comes out? Any other ideas?

I HATE the thought of adding a transom repair to my project. I've read a ton here how to do it, but it still sounds like a tough job to me.

I assume the stringers run into and are attached to the transom, but not sure. All looks glassed in together at the stern.

I think that is the only sure way. Try around where the drive mounts & any other penetrations (drain plug, speedo pickup, transducer) & at the stringer joints. Those are the most suceptible to water ingress. Won't take very big holes - what comes out of the drill bit should tell you.

Drill a small hole towards the bottom of the transom if water drains or weeps out, or the material on the drill bit is moist, you have water in the transom and most likely rot to go with it.
