How to check trim fluid?

How do I go about checking the trim fluid on a 1991 Johnson Fastrike J150GLEIS--G02956027 trim all the way up and when I take off the cover she pews trim fluid on the ground is this normal? Sometimes it sound like there is air in the system??? What to do?

Boat level, trim all the way up, then supported by the trail locks, then take the large slotted screw out and fill until fluid runs out, then close, cycle up and down several times and repeat the whole process until no more fluid can be added.
