How to checkout/test a used lower unit for a 150hp OMC?

I'm new owner of a boat with a 150hp OMC in nice shape except has a broken skeg and moronic bottom painting of the lower unit. So I'm browsing CL and find a local L.U. for sale at a cheap price.
Question is what checks, tests can I do before buying?
First step will be to speak to seller and get the history of this and see what kind of person I'm dealing with.
1) How would I check for a bent shaft or is this so uncommon I shouldn't worry?
2) Seals are another concern but I don't have the ability to pressure test but would buy tester if they're reasonable
3) Internal wear: If owner left lube in the LU I can check it for both shavings or water but if it's dry what would you do?
Could a local dealer/shop check it out for me?
Thanks a lot

I get some no lots of parts off ebay, with a lower you are just taking a chance, the only way to inspect it is break it down.Other than that the owners word, get it in writing that it works! in the questions to ask seller. If its bad either return it if that is a sale condition or go to ebay and lodge a complaint. Without taking it apart or testing on a motor all you can do is make sure the shiftrod goes to all 3 positions and the driveshaft turns and it is visibly in good condition.Good luck

As was said, it is hard to know you have a good LU, unless you install it on your motor and test it. Is there more wrong with your present gearcase than broken skeg and bad paint? If not, you can get a new skeg welded on, or run w/o it.

Removal of the bad paint could take an hour so so.....
