How to clean engine parts

Hello board!

I took apart my outboard and before putting it back together I want to clean it really good because there is like 30 year old grease and oil all over the parts and its nasty. How do you guys recommend cleaning the parts, and what methods and or products to use? I am located in Canada so I don't know if I'll have the same products as some of you guys in the states..

Also, what is the best way to removing old sticky gaskets off of the surface without damaging the surface/face of the casings?

Oh and these parts are NOT internal (engine) related such as pistons, crank etc.. This is for the lower unit, exhaust extension plates, shaft housing, power trim unit etc..

IMO, the only degreaser that'll still cut through most anything is aerosol brake parts cleaner. As for removing sticky old gaskets, careful scraping is the only method I know.

I use Aerosol brake cleaner for cleanup where I don't want to remove paint. I use chem tool aerosol for jobs where no paint is involved, like internal parts or carbs.

The brake cleaner has a strong spray that blasts oil, dirt and grease away and dries film free. About $3 a can down here in auto parts stores.

I just replaced 2 carbs, fuel pump, filter, and cleaned up bunch of other parts as well using Aerosol brake cleaner as mentioned by JoLin and Texasmark above. It works great. I used air compressor to blow everythig out.

Thanks for the tips guys! Brake cleaner worke nicely!

When replacing gaskets, is it recommended to use a gasket sealer type of glue? I am about to put my powerhead back on and have everything ready, just wondering if it's a good idea to do this or not?

What are the positives vs negatives??

+'s Holds gasket in place during installation, helps fill any gouges that may occur. -'s Harder to remove incase you have to do it again.
