How to clean ice maker

Picked up a Scotsman cm250 ice maker at an auction. The unit powers up and cools correctly. I will still have to test the timing circuity. The water section and the ice bin of the machine have a lot calcium deposits. What is a good way to remove all the calcium? Anyone have experience with ice makers? Suggestions?

I would use a food safe version of a product like CLR.. I'v had to clean one a while ago and used a product by Kay/Ecolab and it was delimer and it was a powder that mixed with hot water.

I agree. Or even CLR and well flushed if there is no food safe version. Straight commercial grade vinegar well flushed would be a second choice.

Call Scotsman customer service, I bet you're not the first to ask the question. No way does CLR go in anything I will eat or drink from ...

You may want to avoid restaurants in the future. They don't use CLR. The use the big boy version which I chose not to mention.

Vinegar hands down for removing calcium..... and a bleach solution to "decontaminate" any molds and multiple rinse cycles.

I agree with Bob. Vinegar is excellent for removing calcium or lime deposits.

Isn't it wonderful how our offspring create new words for us, then we use them for another 50 years? One of my daughters came up with clokit punki (chocolate pudding). I still call her Punki (with great affection). Another daughter used pusgetti for spaghetti. I didn't call her that.

My brothers and sisters and I (all in our 60s or late 50s) still call it pusgetti. Nobody remembers who started it although we presume it was one of the little girls.

My nephew used to be stirfe all the time. Took us forever to figure out he meant thirsty.

ROTFL... and just to think I even did a google search on that product...:facepalm:

Anyhow, I tried soaking some small parts in diluted vinegar over night and the calcium barely budged. I am thinking industrial strength now....diluted nitric acid.

I suspect what's in use by restaurants is FDA-approved. Don't remember CLR having that designation, though I don't remember looking that closely, either. I know it has yet to work on any problem my wife has attacked with it ... :faint2:
