Hi All !
I was wanting to clean the motor up on the '75 Johnson 4hp, it's oiled up from the fuel mix and I was wanting to clean and prep for a repaint any suggestions on what I have to do? What's safe to use to clean with, whats the right paint to use etc. Also the shift lever is worn {I believe}in the groove area so when I have it in the slow gear it slides itself to the stop position any ideas? Thank You all in advance!:D:D

Re: How to clean shaft ?

I repainted my motor from the cover down, with really good results. First I wiped it down with mineral spirits to remove oil and grease. I then lightly sanded it ALL over. Any places where I hit bare metal, I used Johnson?Evinrude primer. A topcoat of Johnson/Evinrude paint covers very nicely. Your local dealer can supply verything you need. Sorry, I can't address your shaft problem.

Thank you for the info! Should I be covering the intake ports before cleaning
or is it safe to go right over them when cleaning? Any marine store will have the Johnson factor spec paint for my year needed{'75}? Can anyone help with the shift lever vibrating to the stop position? I don't know if it's a simple
take the lever out and make the groove deeper or if I need to kook into a new one.? Thank you !
