How to Connect Shift Rod on Lower Unit, 89-125hp

I removed the lower unit last fall and now I have a problem. I reinstalled everything but I forget how the shift rod connects up. It sits vertical with a hole for a pin. Then the linkage that connects the throttle comes down and is shaped like an "L". Am I missing a part here?
That piece is visible without removing anything. Look at where the shift linkage connects from the lower unit to the upper unit. It's down in front of the lowerunit about 12 inchs from the bottom of the unit.

OK. The shift rod goes up throught the unit and connects to the L shaped piece with another piece. Onto the L goes another cylindrical shape peice that slides onto the L. At the other end of the cylinder are two holes, one for the shift rod, then, at a 90 degree angle, another hole that a pin goes through to hold them together.

Does this make sense?

There is a round steel piece about 3/8 by 2 inches with the hole for the pin and bottom rod, and that slips over the "L" and the lower part goes in it and then the tiny pin and cotter pin

yeah i concur, there is a white cylinder that slides over the L shaped rod that comes off the upper unit, it has the hole in it so you can slide the shift rod through and then button it into place with the pin and cotter pin. i just did mine and DO NOT SPIN THE SHIFT ROD if you screw up the adjustment it wont shift and be careful not to bend the rod either.
