HI, I have a 1980 22' Aquasport. My engine is an I/O and I have been putting lots of money into it since I bought it. I think I found a great deal 2002 Mercury optimax 200hp with controls and bracket for $1200. The engine has been setting for about a year but the owner says that the engine is in great condition with low hours. All the gas was drain prior to storage. Is this a good deal?

I remember reading posts about converting an I/O with lots of pics but I cannot find it. Can anyone please provide me with helpful links on how this is done.

I have never done anything like this but I think I will be able to. The fiberglass part I will hire someone to do.

What do I need to do besides remove the I/O, put the barcket on, and install the controls.

Would it be worth it to do this on a 1980 boat; everything seems solid, the floors hull, and transom.

Also How would I check the transom for rott without drilling?

Thanks

It would be faster and cheaper to put a new engine and outdrive in the boat than converting it. It can be done though.

1,200 for a 2002 200HP seems a little low if its actually in that good of condition.

$1200 for a 2002 200 hp outboard would be an excellent deal in the midwest. I would be suspicious as to whether there is something wrong with it.

90% who do this are unhappy afterwards. it throws off, the boats proper center of gravity.

Almost all older hulls used the same shape mold for IO, OB, and a bracket, even many of the newest still do. Poor set up leads to poor performance, a floatation bracket makes it much easier to get good results, it just depends on the hull and power as to what you need to do.

Install a good quailty Jack Plate that has already been designed and tested. I would hate to hear that your lost your 200hp outboard due to an improperly designed and built Jack Plate.

With that said, I can help you out with a couple of inexpensive options if you don't want to break the bank on a full blown hydraulic Jack Plate.

CMC is a great product
Also Hydro Dynamics

center of gravity, you are moving the engine weight back several feet. this move the center of gravity back. it will effect all performance aspects.

Thanks for all the info.

So, do you guys suggest that I shouldn't do it?

I was thinking of getting the engine and selling my boat as is and putting the engine on a used boat without a engine.

What do you think I should do. I really don't have or want to put anymore money into the current engine I have.

Thanks

I am pretty sure that when my boat was new you had the option of an IO or OB. Would this matter about handling and center of gravity?
