How to determine year of late-model Mercury outboard?

I am driving up to check out a 2004 Mercury 2 stroke 40hp and I just want to confirm that it is in fact a 2004. What serial number should I be looking for? Thanks guys!

The manufactured date should be on the tag on the transom bracket..
