I have a side console with a key to start the engine,
I was wondering how I can disable the key so that I don't need it to start ??
one time, I bent the key in the middle of the lake and barely got it back in to start the motor to get home.

thanks

Leave the key in the run position. Then rope start it. Pull the kill switch lanyard to kill it. No changes necessary. But call me curious. Why not fix it???

there is nothing wrong with it, you need the key to start and run the engine. I was wondering if I could by pass this, have it start with just a button, I am more worried about breaking the key and getting stranded on the lake than
having someone carjack, the boat.

My guess is you are putting too much pressure on it during starting vs shut-off, to bend the key. If that is the case, if the key did break off it would be in "run". You would be able to start it via Silvertip's suggestion. Even if it is on the "off" position, a screwdriver and/or pliers should be able to turn the switch with the key section still in there. Also, many small outboards can be started when the wiring plug is removed. I would leave it alone.

You don't need a push button. You need a short piece of wire and then simply jump the starter solenoid. If the key was turned off when you broke it, you still have a problem. So again, what are you doing that you are so worried about breaking the key off.

i was once on the middle of the lake and the key was bent,
it did not go in. My friend had it caught on something and it pulled out the key out and had bent it. There must be a way of by passing the key,
it is in a position where it could get banged up.
