How to disassemble Mark choke knob?

I'd like to remove the choke knob on my Mark 58 to replace the grommet it rides in as well as to repaint the top cowl. Trouble is, I can't tell for sure how it comes out -- if it's one piece I don't want to bugger it up trying to unscrew the knob from the shaft... .

Anyone know whether and how it comes apart?

Hi,

As I remember it unscrews.
Follow it under the cowl and if it appears to slip
over the shaft then it unscrews. If it goes to a bracket
you have to remove the cotter pin on the choke rod
or the bolt that goes into the choke knob so you
can remove the cowl. It is one of the two ways.
Enjoy.

On my 1961 Merc 400 there is a bolt on the underside of the bracket and you have to hold that bolthead while you unscrew the knob from the top. Seems like it is a 5/16" bolthead. Once you get a wrench on that bolt, you may have to use a pliers or channel lock to turn the knob to get it started. It's not real easy to get to that bolt underneath.

Thanks Corm, I already have the cowling off.

I need -- I think -- to take the choke knob itself apart. It's the type where the bracket bolts into the end, but I can't tell whether it's a solid piece of aluminum, whether the knob on the outside of the cowling unscrews, or whether the part on the inside of the cowling that the bracket bolts to unscrews... . I guess the only other possibility is if the grommet and the knob come out as an assembly and one then works the grommet off of the knob.

The aluminum knob itself is one piece. It is bolted to the bracket that attaches to the choke linkage.

OK, thanks. Glad I didn't try to unscrew it!
