Not being a mechanic, my boat shop has thrown in the wrench, reporting that the 1st cyl has no compression, and another has no spark, I took it to him for a overheat only after he replaced the water pump, and it overheated on wot, but cools ok on idle, pumps plenty of water at slow speed, and runs smooth, Hes not charging me for the new impeller install and suggest repowering the boat with another motor, of similar vintage, or scrap the boat, a 89 bayliner, nice condition. and go shopping for a new boat .
So the question is there a market for this engine? whole, a junk yard for boat engines. Im not a ebay type. and definitely not prone to piece it out.

I would get a second opinion... he sounds too incompetent to take his advice on a several thousand dollar decision.

I live in West Chester Pa. Just outside Philadelphia. If you want to trailer it for the ride, I will diagnose it for free and tell you exactly what you need. I will give you an approximate repair cost also. Only thing is that the repair will take a little time. I work long hours and only do it as a hobby. The choice is yours. Contact me at Tonyonmemory@yahoo.com. if interested.

If you want to sell it, try craigslist.com . Last week I sold a boat and motor, a spare I/O engine block, and a 25 hp Evinrude. Never seen so much action in my life when trying to sell something !!!

Re: How To Dispose Of A 89 Force 150?

here's the update, took the motor to a second marina after the first said good luck, run it till it seizes and don't let the tow insurance lapse, don't bring it back here. So I went to the county fair and talked to some marina represented there and they had no trouble with fixing Force, getting parts or anything about them, they too were also authorized Merc dealers. So I took it to the nearest one to home, and he confirmed that #4 CLY WAS 5LB NO COMPRESSION, AND 2 HAD NO SPARK, BUT OK TO PUT AROUND THE LAKE ON.
My local neighborhood computer whiz kid, told me about his brother, engine whiz, We headed to the lake today, he confirmed the compression, but saw tell tale leakage , pulled the thermostat cover off, NO THERMASATAT, BUT EXHAUST GAS CAME OUT. Home we go, and a fiber camera exam of the cylinder , looks good. the Head is almost off, except for 3 bolts that froze, and snapped , will drill and tap off over the week end, and wait for the gaskets and thermostat next week. gotta love honest youth, and technical education.
