Hello fellow Iboaters :) ..

Today I would like to teach/relay/inform those of us that are having trouble with Fiberglass Cloth.

Now Cloth can be anything from Wovin(g) Rovin(g) or 1708 or simple finish cloth..and everything in between.

Im not talking CSM ( chopped stranded mat normally in 1.5 oz ).

Its very simple .. use Masking tape.

Wherever you want to cut on your 'cloth' .. put masking tape over your cutout lines before you cut your glass. ( the more tape on the used piece the better ).

Before you cut out your pattern use simple masking tape to criss cross your cutout pattern. This will help when moving the fiberglass from point A-B ( so it does not stretch to much ). If you want to pre-wet the glass it even helps more.

Tape is your friend when making and installing larger glass patterns.

1708 moves in one way..Woving moves in two ways .. if you have a pattern then Tape it up so it does not Move Until you are in the wetout stage (resin coating) ..

Remove the masking tape when your glass is applied and in place without having a Pizza affect on your stringers..

This works for Every cloth glass keeping it in shape..

You leave the tape on when you pre wet ? I assume with the sticky side up wet the side without the tape install glass then peel tape off and finish wet out..

What is combo mat ? If your having trouble with air bubbles there are 3 possibilities ..

1. Your surface is not prepped properly.
2. You dont have enough mat on the bond side.
3. You dont have mat on the last lam ( woving roving needs mat on the last layer IMO )

Yes..and thank you for bringing that point up.

Apply the tape to the Cloth side .. NOT the Mat side if your using a fabmat type.

Never prewet Mat alone .. bad mojo ;)

But yup.. you got the basic Idea :) .

Combo mat is what they call it where I get it. It's a 24oz woven roving with 1.5oz csm sewn to the back side. Icouldnt get 1708 here locally so this is what I went with. The problem is its so stiff so my fillets have to be very big so it sticks in the corners

You can Pre-Wet Mat by itself IF you use plastic or wax paper as a backer and are creating a manageable "Patch" piece. Sometimes it's the preferred method. Lay all the layers of the patch on the backer and wet it out and then carry it to the area to be repaired and lay it up as one unified piece. Use the Plastic or wax paper to aid in smoothing it in place. Works really well.

Well..you need to use the right material for the job at hand..

Yes..that 24oz is some stiff stuff especially when off the end of a roll. The resin will eventually work into it making it more pliable ..but maybe not in time when the resin cures.
