How to find year of motor

Hi, This is my first post but have used iboats archives extensively over the last few weeks since buying an old Johnson outboard with a 30 hp cowling. I have searched and searched again for a model and or serial number but cannot locate one to save my life. I know its supposed to be on a plate on the transom mount but is not. How can i find the year of the motor without that plate? I believe it is an 89 or newer becase the slow idle needle is in the side of the carb instead of in the front, per schematic i found at a parts website. any help would be greatly appreciated. look for a silver disc on the powerhead. Should have the model number engraved on it.

Is the disk you are talking about the freeze plug?

OK, thats the serial number.
Was there a model number stamped above it?
i.e. A number starting with a "J" or "E".

Nope thats it except for an "m" with a square around it, the "M" is stamped in many different locations. Does anyone know how translate the serial number into a model, year, etc.?

As you have already discovered, Johnson does not put the model number on the freeze plug, only the serial #. The squared M is the OMC trademark.

From my very limited collection of serial numbers, I figure it is either a 1990 or 1991.

I have an evinrude 100hp, can you tell me what year it is?
It says Model number: 1008838

i found that a 100883B is a 1968 model motor, engine cover looks the same as well, are you sure the last number 8 isn't the letter B
