This is not meant to be a smart-a** answer, but may seem that way.

Seriously, if the kid can't set this up him/her self, they probably don't need it yet....;)

I have found gmail to be a great service, I use it as one of my alternative email addresses and have no complaints, no ad's, no BS, just a heck of a lot of storage and no BS, good service.

I set up a zilladog.net email address for my 9 year old last year.. It has parental controls that allow you to restrict who can email them.. Pretty good service.

My son has had hotmail, yahoo, and live for years (he's 14 now). He likes the live account best (not sure why, but something about the games?).

I don't recommend (for anyone) using your ISP's email service as a primary or even well-used secondary account. If you ever move, or they change hands, it becomes a hassle. Years ago, when broadband first came into being, I got it, and my email was .@home.net. ATT then bought them, and I had to change everything over to .@att.net. Then Comcast bought that, and once again, I had to change everything over to .@comcast.net. When I moved to FL, an area that didn't have comcast, I lost everything in that account. What a royal PITA it was.

I know use yahoo, gmail, and inbox. All free, and go with me wherever I go. Just my $0.02

This is so when we ban you, you can keep coming back :p

Great advice there. I use inbox.com myself but the primary reason was I could actually get myself and my wife first initial+last name addresses as it was fairly new at the time.

I use AOL for my kids (it's free as well), they have parental controls on what emails they can view and I get a notification if they try to open something they shouldnt, also it has controls for what wbsites they can goto as long as they use aol for the search engine ect.

Bubba, I don't think any of those bad qualities are unique to free web mail accounts and wouldn't apply to say a comcast.net account. Most all of them also offer web mail so I would think the servers would be similar as far as email retention.

ezbtr, you may think about getting him his own computer with extra memory. Kids download a lot of games, etc. and it will eat your memory up. Also, if you keep a houshold budget or do any type of work on your computer for business you will NOT want him sharing the same hard drive. Sooner or later it will crash. Just a thought.

Not to mention viruses that he will undoubtedly pick up from his email.

or from Myspace. That thing is a cesspool.

I have twice had to rebuild my cousin's computer. She has twin teenage girls. The last time I did it I told her "I haven't seen a computer this bad since the last time I saw YOUR computer!"

Re: How to get an email address for your kid?

And I have to disagree. What so many fail to understand is that sites like Google, Bing, Yahoo, AOL etc. mine emails to generate spam. Pardon me, "targeted advertizing". Second issue is that once its on on of their servers, its there for eternity and kids say and do dumb things that can and will come back to haunt them. (So do adults for that matter.) Finally, all of the major providers have had their email servers hacked and exposed private information to the hackers.

In this case, "free" has far too high a price in my mind.

If you think your paid ISP email is immune to that stuff, you're only kidding yourself. I've had my yahoo account for 14 yrs now, and I still get no spam. None. Nada. Zilch. The trick is, you have a pseudo email that you use for registering on 'stupid' sites, or use it on sites where you're just not sure if it'll create spam. Spam comes from your email address being sold off to advertisers and marketing lists. Keep it off of those, and spam is not an issue.

If you aren't seeing spam in your ISP email folder, it's because they (now) have filters for that junk. My home/att/comcast account was littered with spam in the days before the filters.

Lots of adults don't know how to set up a new email account.

Why wouldn't parents want the help their kids?

Well, I would say there is nothing wrong with a parent helping their child set one up, but in today's day and age, if the child needs the parents help, it might be an indication they aren't ready for it yet. I know that my little nieces and nephews were very adapt at computer stuff when they were 7-8yo. My 10yo niece will be getting a 1000 dollar laptop computer, if she doesn't already have one. If a child is so inept at setting up an account, they're probably not ready for the complexities and responsibilities that come with having one.

I can vouch for this because I set my mother up with a gmail account last year to email her grandkids and such. Biggest mistake of my life, she STILL has no idea how to attach ANYTHING to the email, how to recognize a possible virus, NOTHING. She can barely forward something, she still calls me and asks me questions every time she uses it, etc etc. She didn't know how to set one up, and now I see she doesn't know how to use one either.

So I'm speaking from experience, if they can't do it themselves, then maybe it shouldn't get done! LOL
