I bought a used lower unit for my 96 Force (mercury) 40HP. It is a mercury, but looks exact. I can get the foot to withing a couple of inches but it won't go any moore. The drive shaft is in far enough to turn the flywheel, the shift linkage is fine. Is it time to get a hammer?
Need help now..
thanks

Just a stab at it.

Measure the old shaft, and make sure it's the same length. There may be a difference between Merc and Force, or it may be the l/u from a long shaft motor, or different HP.
If it's the driveshaft length, just get a seal kit, and use your original shaft in the new l/u.
