I have just purchased a nice little 14' boat with a 40 HP Evinrude. There is no ID plate on the engine, no Model/Serial number. Is there anyway to ID the model number/year?

If it is from the 1960's you will find a durable plate up above transom bracket or on the side of transom clamp.-----There are some folks who can pinpoint year with a glance at the motor if it is still in original paint / decals.

He has another post about motor not "peeing" so I would assume it is a later model.

Yea I know where plate is supposed to be but not there. I've emailed previous owner to see if he knows year of motor. Boat is an '88, so assume motor is also.
