How to get snap ring out of lower unit?

I am tring to get the snap rings out of the lower unit under the bearing carrier on a 90 150GT. I have bought several different pairs of snap ring pliers and nothing will get these monster size rings out. I called the dealer to see if they would sell the tool listed in my oem repair book but they told me it was for dealers only. Anybody have any suggestions? I am to the point that I think it maybe easier to destroy them and get two new ones.

Check Sears, harbor freight.... or snag one of the Tool Trucks that you might see running around (better yet call one of them)

When you get the proper tool, a word of caution. When you lock that pliers, and remove the ring, it is under a lot of tension. Don't have anyone looking over your shoulder, such as children. When I remove these ring's, I place it down on the work mat, then step down on it before unlocking the pliers. That ring can really go flying if it slips off the pliers.

McMaster Carr has snap ring pliers for up to about 6" diameter o-rings. Go to their website and search for snap ring pliers.

Thanks I will check out these sites. I ordered a 10in set of locking pliers but they will not compress it enuff to get out the rings. I guess this is a good reason to get some new tools.

It's possible, too, that the ring is corroded into the snap ring groove. In that case, spray some penetrating lube around it, let it soak, then take a flat-tipped screw driver and hammer, and tap the ring all around it, being careful not to damage the housing's bore.
Now, use your internal snap ring pliers, and compress the ring. Slowly withdraw it. May help to have someone stand by to put a very small screwdriver tip behind the ring as it clears the groove. This will keep the ring from going back into the groove.
And as was mentioned before, these rings can fly off the pliers and injure you. Please wear safety glasses.

These locking types are the best, but expensive!

The ring is free, I can compress it just not enough to get it passed the groove. I got the first one out with a hammer and screw drivers but it was destroyed. Good thing is this is a spare foot that was given to me. I want to be able to get the second one out with out damage before I take apart the one on my boat.
