started tearing down my 84 70hp evinrude yesterday. I got the lower cowling off and started to take the foot off.

all four top bolts as well as the three up under the anode are out and the foot dropped down about two inches...but wont come out past that point. what am I doing wrong?

I was thinking it may be in gear or something but moving the lever doesnt affect it at all?

Did you disconnect the shift linkage which I think is up under the starter?

nope, definitely did not lol. I'll look into that this afternoon. first time on an evinrude engine but on my mercury all I have to do is unbolt the foot and off it comes, same with my neighbors yamaha. I guess evinrude just wants to be different?

We "Johnnyrude-ers" like to call it, "right"! I'm sure you know this, but the best accessory in the world on these motors is a good OEM service manual. I didn't believe it until I got one, but they were right all along. Good luck.

yeah, I'm looking around to order one off here though it seems iboats only has 70hp manual from 1974-1979 for some reason in their repair manual section?

maybe the local library will have one?

Well I hope you currently have it on blocks instead of just hanging there from the shift rod, lift the LU back up and put 2 of the bolts back in it, finger tight will do just to hold it there.

Follow the shift linkage down the side and you will see that it goes directly under the bottom carb. Use a 1/4 drive ratchet and a swivel and you can take the bolt off that connects it to the shift rod. Some say to remove the starter for easier access, but I never had to.

If you need anything else just holler, you have the same motor I have, the only difference is mine is a 75hp

Re: how to get the foot off?

is this what everyone is referring to as the shift linkage bolt?

I still dont understand how this would stop the foot from coming off due to how it has a bend in it and I dont see how it could slip down that tiny shaft opening...more like it would need to come out the top?

didnt have time to do anything other than take the pic due to all the plans we had this weekend.

Re: how to get the foot off?

That is the bolt you have to remove.

The LU will not drop with the shift linkage attached to that bolt. Right above the bend in the rod there is a flat on the rod that slips into a clevis that the bolts goes through. The bottom of the shift rod is screwed into the shift assembly in the Lower unit thus making it impossible to remove the LU without removing this bolt.

Before installing the LU make sure the shift lever length adjustment is set right. This is critical for proper shifting. And, make sure the shift rod does not turn a little while sliding it back up the mid section during reassembly because the flat end (where the bolt goes through) has to slide between the clevis for proper alignment.

Yeah, what he said. You're basically suspending the LU with that thin rod. Most of us learn this when we scratch our heads for an hour trying to figure out why it wouldn't drop all the way off, lol.
