How to get this outboard to tilt for trailering?

I have a 1960 Evinrude Fastwin #15032 and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to lock it in the "up" position for trailering and or coasting into a beach. Does it not? I have just been using a ratchet strap to keep it up for transportation but that is a total pain. Any help would be appreciated.

i forget what its called.....maybe a transom saver?, but you can buy a thing that keeps the motor up, and absorbs "road shock".

no tilt lock on that motor. A transom saver works best

Look at item #77 on page 9 in the above post, it's the tilt lever. Not a good way to transport, but it will hold it up.

There is no tilt lock on that engine. I have the same one. A transom saver is best for transit.

Is there any way to make a decent transom saver with angle aluminum, or something? I have a similar problem with my old Johnsons. I have to tie them down to keep them from flopping around int transit, but it never quite works right and I'm always afraid I'll bottom out or something. Thanks.

Thanks for the responses everyone!

There seems to be some debate... is there or isn't there?

Transom savers are fine... I have just been using a ratchet strap... but what about when I am in the water and want to tilt when pulling up on a beach or something? Seems like it would be a pain to have to use a ratchet strap to get it to stay every time. Right?

The tilt lever you speak of (#77), if I am not confused, is for titling while the motor is running... a variance of a few inches. Nothing high enough for trailering.

no tilt lock lever on that. Use a transom saver.

Right... transom saver... but for in the water... when pulling up on a beach. Just hold it up? Ratchet straps?

You can tilt it up, but there is no way to lock it. On the beach just let the lu sit in the sand won't hurt it.

My Evinrude 4 also does not have a tilt lock for trailering. However, the tilt is plenty stiff enough to keep it up when out on the water (beached or whatever). Perhaps the tension nut mentioned in post #2 of this thread is your answer for that?

hmmm. good idea. Thanks. Do you use a ratchet strap or transom saver for trailering?

We pretty much let ours bounce around but we aren't going that far. For a long trip, it probably wouldn't stay mounted on the boat.
