Re: How to get Wife and Kids Bums out of Bed.

FWIW, I have always been an early riser - even on weekends; the admiral not so much. I have always been ready to go (anywhere) early; the admiral not so much. I have spent the better part of the last 40 years (married for 38 of those) waiting on her. Two things that I know for sure.....(1) it ain't gonna change anytime soon and (2) she is well worth the wait......

Good luck.

Hmmm.... if it weren't for the comment about 40 years (it's only been 34 for me) we could be talking about the same woman. Like you said- it ain't gonna change.

I think I set myself up to be Ridiculed. That's ok.

Thanks for the replies.

Blast your air horn a few times, guarantee you they will be up!! Ask me how I know this! LOL! It may take them a few hours to find the humor in it, but they will.... sooner or later! Believe it or not, my wife usually gets up before I do now when we go for an early morning trip. And yes, she got even with me for the air horn... at 2am!

Az, it's easy, just wake them up with "Come on kids, we're going to Disneyland". Tell the wife you're taking her on a cruise. You're not lying that way.

geez, unless I'm going fishing I never head out that early, usually sleeping off the hangover from the previous night.

I've always said that fish do not wear wristwatches so it really doesn't matter what time I leave. However around here the weather is an issue. This time of year squalls are very common in the afternoon so when I'm headed offshoreI like to leave early. However, for a boat ride I'd never get up at that hour of the day.

Camping the Night before aint going to happen. Too Hot even in the evening to Tent Camp. Unless I figure out how to pull my travel trailer and boat at the same time.

Well if its any help, I get up at 2:30 and usually head towards the lake around 3:30 with a stop for worms at Wal-Mart and gas that usually puts me at the ramp by about 5 am. Which is typically when the fish are still pretty active. I usually go with my uncle or step dad and they are both very understanding about the need to be on the water early. I live here in AZ too and can understand the heat.

I like the previously mentioned arrive in the afternoon and swim til it calms down and then do your thing. Different strokes for different folks. I don't think your being a boat nazi but I do think you should be sensitive to their schedules as well or to everyone elses point your family will associate boating with pain or aggravation.

For me, I gotta be there early.

Re: How to get Wife and Kids Bums out of Bed.

While not quite as "enthusiastic" as AZBoat here, I nevertheless have come to an understanding with the family that I'm usually up and out by 7am while on vacation. Sounds late but with the boat in the water at the back door, prep time takes about as long as filling my mug.

There is a standing invite to join me on this first ride of the day but none of them ever do. Then, after a nice 90 minutes or so alone on the lake I head back to the cabin for a family breakfast. By then the missus is usually just staggering out to the deck clutching the coffee thermos I filled and left for her before casting off. We sit and enjoy a mug together, I tell her what I saw and did and she nods and makes nice noises like she cares. :D

Tubing, swimming, beach excursions and other fun stuff then starts with the family after breakfast.

I love both aspects - peace and quiet to start the day on my own, then rowdy family time til sundown and beyond. Am I disappointed my kid isn't the boat fanatic I was at his age? Sure, but I've learned some coping strategies. :)

We've been pulling the boat out at noon and people are just starting to get to the ramp to start their day. You just have to be flexible and adapt to others doing their thing. But not everyone needs to go all the time if that's an option for you. Leaving at 10-11 and not getting home till 6 or 7 is a totally different day at the lake from leaving early.

While everyone's asleep, set all the clocks and watches in the house and tow vehicle ahead one hour.:D

As a hunter/angler, i can appreciate the need to get my ***** outta bed to accomplish things in life. My wife does not get that..... HOWEVER.... when papa bear says its go time, its go time. I need someone to run the riggers, and the wee one is about 6 years away from that! lol
If she want to sleep on the boat, let her.... hey, wait a minute, that rods been hit for 1/2 hour!
Nothin like trollin for salmon with a real live............... SALMON good grief!
LET THEM SLEEP MAN, find a friend you can share the early AM with, then do your thing with the fam.

Re: How to get Wife and Kids Bums out of Bed.

Didn't mean it like that. What has your family said when you talked to them about it?

I know Im not going to get them out the door by 5:00am. That is unrealistic. Non boating days they well sleep until 9:00am and by that time I have been up several hours. The latest I sleep is 7:00am on the weekend non boating days.

I would be happy out by 6:00am. When Im tell them I want to be out the door by 6:00am I get moan and groans from all of them. They still have an awsome time at the lake and forget about having to get up early.

Just wondering if anyone else has these early morning battles.

The only people I know who get up at or before 5 am are blue haired, cane toting seniors. lol

You get them out of the house at 6:00!! That's good. I'd say keep doing what you are doing. Tell them 5 like always but in your mind say 6. It's a compromise they just don't know you are compromising.

Also instead of boating at sunrise just go out at sunset. It's nicer then anyways.

Fortunately the family cabin is on the water. I get up at 4:30 every day as well. So does my brother. We'll typically go for a sunrise cruise every morning and return to the cottage for breakfast and begin the "family activities". 5:00 AM is the absolute best time of day as far as I'm concerned.

Re: How to get Wife and Kids Bums out of Bed.

I will say this much on the subject.

When I was a kid my father always had a boat. Whenever we made plans to go out on it, I couldn't sleep the night before, and was up before the sun. I was dragging him out of bed. My brother and sister on the other hand were not as enthusiastic and were more like your family. It could be that they are boat people, but not as much as you.

BTW, 6:00 am is not bad at all if they aren't as amped up to go as you. I know the heat is what your trying to avoid, but it sounds like they do have a great desire to go, 5:00 am is just... 5:00 am.

Yes I dont think they have the love of boating like I do. They like to go but do not have the love. Now my youngest 8yr is the exception. He gets up when I do. Its my two teenage boys and my wife that I have to drag out of bed. I think my 8yr loves to go boating as much as I do. He is out there with me preping the boat for the day on the lake.
Now if he could just drive the boat that would be perfect.
