how to hook up a tach

on a 1985 35hp mercury how do you hook a tack up the controll box has a plug but i dont have the plug that goes in it so how can i hook it up with out haveing that plug that goes in it

You should have two yellow wires going to your rectifier. Hook your tachs signal lead to one of your leads that one of the yellow leads is attached to.

if i rember correctly i have a yellow and a gray wire on the rectifier

The yellow wire will be fine. You have to set your tach to match your stator. The tach just shows how many pulses your stator puts out. Theres a switch on the back you can adjust for how many pulses your stator puts out per revolution.

how do i find out how many pluse it puts out it is a 1985 35hp mercury

ok so what is a cheap tach that will work i have been looking on ebay cause the one i got dont work i got it off a junk boat that some one had messed with the wiring i think it is broke cause when i start the motor up it will go to 3000 rpm and stay i have checked my tach wire on the rectifier and the rectifer is good

so if i get a tach that has 1234 on the back witch number should i put it on
