Take out the hydraulic system and install a teleflex cable steering system, I have never seen a hydraulic steering system on that vintage engine.

I can't deal with the cable system its too anoying for me, is there anyway I can rig it up? I am sure there is a way to do it? I pick up the boat thursday so i will get a better look at it without he suzuki strapped to it, looks pretty plain and simple but i really duno.

Before the question can be answered, we need to know what brand and model of hydraulic steering, as well as the type of ram at the motor. Otherwise, we are guessing.

I will have to let you all know that when I pick the boat up thursday but it is a 1987Edson sunburst bow rider with a 75 suzuki mounted on it but the guy is keeping the suzuki, it looks as if it will fit my motor but i may have to rig it up someway or another worst case jsut didn't know if anyone knew about a way to do so bc the guy i bought the motor off had it on a hydraulic system

i think the ram hooks to the motor much like a standard rotary system. are all the parts to it? i think they are universal for all outboards.

I would go rotary though....less to go wrong. Keep it greased and it'll outlast the boat. Even better is the Teleflex Quick Connect. Cable goes bad....disconnect and replace. Helm goes bad......disconnect and replace. SOOOO SIMPLE

You cut off the starboard end of the picture, but from what I can tell that isn't hydraulic. Just plain ol' push-pull cable system

There IS such a thing as a hydraulic steering system that has a ram attached to the starboard side of the tilt tube, but I don't think you have one because there apparently isn't enough room for one in the transom cutout. Unless you can show me otherwise, you do not have hydraulic steering. That is a push-pull cable, not a hydraulic ram. I ought to know, I made the side mount hydraulic steering rams for 21 years.

I doubt that you have a hydraulic system, simply because very few people would have one on a boat intended for relaively small engines. Further, the charge system on your '69 115 only puts out 9 amps. Trying to run a hydraulic pump and a bunch of gear on the boat with a 9 amp alternator (stator/flywheel), doesn't stike me as a good plan.

Look under the dash at the back side of your steering wheel - you will probably see either a drum or a rack/pinion type mechanism, with a teleflex style cable hooked to it.

If you have a push/pull type system, you will need an adapter, since your motor doesn't have a tilt tube. You can buy a transom clamp assembly, but I recommend a system like the one in the photo below. The advantage is that it doesn't restrict the tilting range of the motor, which most transom clamp setups do.

Make sure that you get one that is rated for your size motor - there are many made for smaller motors (usually up to 40hp), so its easy to get the wrong one. Mine (pictured) is rated for up to 140hp.

Thanks for the reply guys you are all probably right I was mistaken, when I think cable I picture the old laundry line with the pullies, so where can I get this adaptor? Would my marine dealer have one? Or do I need to order one up?

What you ordered is probably a transom clamp - its a bar that fastens to the transom and has a clamping device on the end. it holds the cable in place, but restricts tilting ability, to some degree. Its not a bad device and does work, but my personal preference is for the adapter that I have.

Call the customer service folks at iboats to ask if they have the tilt tube type adapter for your size motor. If they don't have a current vendor, tell them to contact Donovan Marine @ donovanmarine.com. This is a wholesaler, so you can't buy from them directly.

well my motor being so old doesn't have tilt on it jsut adjust it by the steel rod level by level, so Im good to go I guess, so this will solve my problem for sure? any pictures of what it is by chance?

Re: how to hook up hydraulic steering on a 1969 johnson 115.

I not talking about tilt & trim - I'm talking about the simple act of tilting the motor up, in order to trailer, etc.

Like I said, the transom bracket is OK & which one you want is a matter of preference. I've used both and think the tilt tube type adapter works much better.

I would hazard a guess that what you bought, is one of these .....

yes that is it, and I see what you mean about the tilting issue, I will be looking for a newer outboard motor in the next few months or so but this will be sufficient for the time being
