How to identify Mercruiser 3.0 starter model

I have a Mercruiser 3.0 DDIS (1990 or slightly earlier) and the manuals I have identify 2 starter motors. The PG200 and PG260.

Are these interchangeable?

Also a quick look has replacement motors running from ~$50 to $200+ Some specifically say Mercruiser replacement others are auto replacements (because it's a GM/Delco I'm guessing)... Is there a difference in Marine vs auto starters? (Seems like they are all sealed units).

Either will work for your motor, note the max amp rating
PG200 standard duty
PG260 heavy duty

there are 4 kinds of GM starters. a direct drive and a PMGR. each one of those comes in staggered bolt pattern (168 tooth flywheel) or straight bolt pattern (153 tooth flywheel)

your picture is a direct drive.

Thanks for giving me even more things to consider

Is it worth changing or better to stick with a straight replacement? Seems like a PMGR would be easier on the battery/starter motor while the direct drive would be simpler (maybe fewer parts that could go wrong) and cheaper.

I would suggest PMGR

unbolt yours or stick your head under there to see if they are staggered or straight, order PMGR (will be listed from 3.0 to 8.2 liter)
