I checked the sticky first and did not see anything about this. I have read that rebuilding an upper unit of an outdrive is EXTREMELY hard to do because everyting including torque tigtening and spacing must be exact. You may have read my recent post about nearly blowing off the entire outdrive.

Well, it looks like at this point the pins and the metal around the pins that connect the bell housing to the gimbal ring failed. The metal looked weak. I am going to put on a new bell housing, gimbal bearing, bellow kit, drive shaft kit, gasket kit, etc....but wanted to check the upper unit of the outdrive that the drive shaft connects to.

Is there any particular method on inspecting this upper unit? Any odvious indicators to look at? Any red flags that I should look for?

GM 250ci 160HP L6 Motor connected to a Pre-alpha 160 outdrive.

year is 67 or 68
Thanks

it tells ya what to look for in the service manual.
grooves worn on to shaft from oil seals.
ujoint brgs check for loosenenss. bearings taht are worn or pitted from water intrusion.
gears, pitting, chipped or broken teeth, excessive or uneven wear
tapered roller brgs. cups that are pitted, grooved, scored, worn uneven, discolored from over heat or that have foreign metal particles embedded in the cup.
inspect oil seals for wear, tears, roughness, proper spring position
o rings for cuts, nicks, hardness and cracks.
any one of those items is reason to replace a suspect part. i'm sure there are more reasons but the best place you can look is your service manual. it has the facts in it.

from looking at your drive in the other thread. i'd think yer ft. seal of the upper at the very least needs to be R&Red..

special tools may be required so read careful as to what ya need to do.
