I recently purchased a 1978 2hp evinrude and the PO took the screw of the top messing up the rewind spring. How do i rewind the spring and install it i spent about an hour trying today and nothing seemed to work. Any ideas?

Re: how to install rewind spring?

This is one of those repairs that is hard to explain in text. If you have done a few its not that hard to do, basic is the spring is connected at both ends by a slot or pin. then the drum attaches at its center via a pin or slot. and yes the spring needs to be coiled either by hand or a rewind tool. If you are new to it I would run it down to your nearest small engine shop, on your motor its about the same as a mower & should not cost much.

If you plan on doing all your own work get an OEM Factory Service Manual. If not, take it to a BRP Dlr if it is a one shot deal.

Re: how to install rewind spring?

well im not one to pay to have anything done. After about 5 hours and 10 different methods i finally figured out a semi "easy" way. First i figured out whitch way it needed to go on. Then i attached the long end to a vise, and unwind it so its a straight piece of metal, attach the bottom plate with the pin to your end of the spring. Thin i just started winding it up making sure to hold it down so it doesnt jump off. Once i got it wound up i worked it onto the pull start housing (took me three times to get it to stay.) Presto bingo its good to go. I needed to put pull start on so that i could test compression. It has around 75 psi on a HF gauge so im thinking it around 80 and thats good. Now i can get the manual and start trouble shooting out the other problems.
