I have a 87 140 Johnson and would like to know how to jump my starter. It turns ever so slowly and will not start motor. This should tell me if the starter is bad or not, Right

Re: How to jump starter

Most times, a slow turning starter is NOT the starter motor, but a low battery, bad solenoid, or most often bad/dirt/untight connections. Check (+) and (-) terminations, spray some CRC or WD40 on the top of the starter drive. Battery must be fully charged, or you're wasting your time.

You can by-pass solenoid with car jumper from (+) on batt to (+) on starter. If it cranks, it's the keyswitch or solenoid at fault usually.

Go directly to the battery with your starter cable just make sure you can release it quikly and watch out for sparks.
