I have a neighbor who refuses to upkeep with their yard, there is an overgrown weed/tree Ive been told its a box elder or something like that growing near the fence line on her side...I put privacy fence up but debris and leaves keep falling in my yard, and more importantly my pool. I talked to the elderly owner about cutting it down and they had no problem with it,but a week or so after I asked the elderly women moved out and I see little or no action around the house... Is there some kind of home remedy I can use to kill this thing? Mind you I would like to do everything on my side of the fence, but to make sure I kill it I will hop the fence if I have to ....... any ideas?

This thing grows fast like weeds,I cut off a 8" trunk that hung over my fence, within a few weeks it had new growth coming off the surface I just cut.
Its growing tall enough to get tangled in the utilities, and I have called them to come check it out...Naturally they didnt want to do anything to it, as it is just starting to reach the electrical lines...

I want this thing dead... I would love to not have to clean leaves out of my pool daily.
Help?

Every time I spill mineral spirits on my lawn, the grass dies within days. Maybe your can accidently spill a gallon of it at it's base. Don't think it's environmentally friendly though. Try pouring an entire gallon of weed killer on it.

Re: How to kill a tree?

My neighbors have a pond that produces mosquitoes by the ton. They have over run MY yard and make MY outdoor space useless. How can I drain their pond so the skitters don't invade my yard??....................................................................I can't ...........................but I can trap/kill all the mosquitoes that come into my yard. You have no right to kill your neighbors tree, however you do have the right to trim the part of the tree that hangs over your side of the fence................at least around these parts.

There are numerous ways to kill trees , depending on the species .
Legally , you can do nothing to harm that tree , short of cutting back portions that protrude over your property line .

If the tree was on YOUR side of the property line , it would be fair game .

Your best approach is to talk to the property owners , and , offer to remove the tree at YOUR expense . ;)

Hayttown just ring the tree. Cut a strip of bark at the base of the tree all of the way around about 3 inches wide. It will take a wile but the tree will die.
Limeted-Time crack a couple of eggs and put them in the pond. It makes a thin film on top of it and the mosquitoes cant get past the film. It will help with the bugs.

For the pond put in some perch! (or other small fish) Fish eat mosquitoes

For the tree, not that I would kill some one else's, go to a farm and garden, there is a pelleted tree killer that is used in places like under power lines, don't know what it is called, never used it, may have even been banned. I am told it will kill trees within 15 feet of where it is placed. Another way I have been told is to drive a copper spike in it. I cut a band 18" around an elm tree in my yard 3 years ago, I cut it down this year it never died

Trespassing and vandalism should get you a nice stiff fine and maybe even civil damages. It is their tree, not yours. Killing it would be like poisoning their dog, and very illegal.

Your rights end at the property line. Cut off what encroaches and live with it.

The elderly owner didn't object to removing the tree; maybe they just can't do it themselves and don't have anyone to do it. Why not just offer to take it down for them. You can help out your neighbor, make a friend instead of an enemy, and solve your dilemma at the same time...

Bore the trunk with a 1" spade bit to it's center, one foot or lower from grade, angled down about 20 to 30 degrees. Purchase some granulated copper sulfate, mix one cup in 1/2 gallon of water. Pour or inject the mix into the hole you bored. As the hole fills, let it soak in and add more until the mix is gone.

It'll be dead in a week.

A green tree is a lot more easier to remove than a dead on. Once you have dead branches falling you'll find that it is more of a problem. You will find this out when the wind starts blowing hard. Just hope they don't land on anything important or anybody.

I got rid of a bunch of trees to limit the leaf problem,,,,,,now they blow in from other properties.

Cut it quick before someone else moves in.

Be careful cutting someone else's property. Do some research at the local registrar of deeds. Find the owner of the property and get their permission to have the tree removed and the stump ground. It will not ever come back. Be prepared to pay for the cost of removal.

A variation on Jameskb2 procedure... drill 1/4" holes in about 3-4 inches, around the base of the tree. Get an injection needle - like you'd use to inject a turkey with cajun spice etc... and inject the tree with straight Roundup. Takes some time, but it will kill it.

Get me a close estimate of the tree's diameter and I will tell you how much TNT to pack into a 2" bore hole..... :D

The copper sulfate method is good; but if you can't get it, a good ole' big copper spike will suffice. But you probably don't have any of them hanging around either.

Copper sulfate is available at most any Tractor Supply, Agriculture outlet, or even high end garden shops. You MIGHT get away with "Shock" treatment for swimming pools although it's mostly chlorine and not as much copper. Copper Sulfate is also used in very low doses for aquarium algae kills. Check pet stores or fish stores. It's common use is algae or weed killing for ponds. It kills anything green. Anything! :D
