How to lift motor?

I need to lift this 1150 6cyl off the back to repair the transom. Lift rings are $30 on Ebay and I'm already way over my budget. Anyone know a good way to lift this monster off without shelling out that kind of dough for a stupid bolt???

Sure, just strap it up any way you can figure out with a chain or something, then pay hundreds of dollars to repair the resulting damage.

The lifting eye is exactly the correct way, and to do it any other way is stupid, not the bolt.

My son and I lifted my 4 cylinder Merc 50 off, about busted our stones doing it. Not only is the motor heavy, but the motor mounting bracket swivels making it twice as hard to hang on to. You're trying to lift a 115... good luck to you brotha'

I say if you could not have figured it out easily by the darn bolts. I would be worried about making some dumb mistake and dropping it or lifting it by soemthing I was not supposed to.

sucks abouthte budget.

LOL, if $30 is out of the budget for an outboard owner... you my friend are in big trouble!

Gee, usually I get a bunch of helpful advice and kind replies on here instead of a bunch of sarcasm. Thanks guys. I simply asked if anyone knew if there was another way to do it safely before I shell out another $30 for one bolt that should cost about $10. That's what this forum is for, is it not?

Re: How to lift motor?

well, you could try a variation of this method, in reverse of course AND bearing in mind that a 115 with PTT is a lot heavier than a 65 without PTT
coincidently we used it for putting on a 1964 65hp as well, undecided whether we'll use it for the 120,
might need an extra bod or three to help with the extra weight

just FWIW,
undoubtedly a block and tackle etc and proper lifting eye would be safer,

Re: How to lift motor?

Thanks Chrome! If it wasn't a 6cyl, I might consider trying that, but I don't think I want to put that much weight on the lower unit/shaft/etc.

And just an fyi, for anyone commenting about me being $30 over budget. I err on the side of safety and quality. I spent an extra $500 to go above and beyong what's simply "required" to restore this boat to make it safer and last longer, so yeah... if I can save $30 on a bolt that could better be spent improving safety and quality, I'll do it. If I can't, then I'll spend the $30.

How about a H/D steel strap bolted on by two of those 5/16" flywheel bolts? I used that all the time to lift the powerhead. I would recommend you drop the gearcase and build a little stand out of 2X4s to hold the transom clamp, midsection and powerhead.

Re: How to lift motor?

Sleekwolf, you can take it off without the lifting eye. I took mine off. I takes about 3-4 people because it is aquward and heavy to grab. Disconnect everything and build a good stand like chris said and have it close. Pick it up and don't let it hit the ground. I definitly would not recommend what chrome did, your 115weighs about 300lbs and you would run the risk of breaking the scag.

I did get a lifting eye later thought, they are the best. But if you have one, then you don't have a excuse for you buddys to come over and drink beer for hours "while you take the motor off".:D

Re: How to lift motor?

No harm ment on the $30 comment my friend, I know from personal experience that whatever you think it will cost to fix, its always a lot more. I would sure hate to see you drop that thing, it is going to be really oppy when you get it lose. Maybe its just my way of feeling bad for myself when I started on my boat and was told "its just a little soft spot in the floor, it should be an easy fix" ... LOL

Again, no harm intended, I have gotten a lot of help in this forum and like to give back whatever I can.

Re: How to lift motor?

Thanks guys! This is exactly the kind of advice I was looking for. :) I knew the good ones would chime in sooner or later. ;)

Chris, that sounds like an idea. I considered something like that, but thought it best to seek advice on here first, not knowing if it would be safe. Thanks, I will definitely check it out and see if I feel good about it.

Chum1, that's exactly the one I was looking at on ebay. $29.94+like $4 shipping, so about the same price. Ironically I HAVE the ring, just not the part it screws into, so it's useless.

Swamp-fox, my buddies will come over just to sit in the boat in my yard and drink if I say the magic words "free beer" LOL!! And we've discussed trying to lift it, but I'd hate to see someone slip and have it crash to the ground. (Oh, yeah, and someone might lose some toes... I suppose I'd feel bad about that too lol)

Hotrod, no offense taken. I'm right there with ya on the "soft floor". I was told by the PO the stringer was good. After looking into it, yeah...not. So maybe that's why I was a little snippy about the replies I got too ;)

If anyone else has any other methods, feel free to post! I love the great people on here!

nicknight, after drinking is probably the only time getting my buddies to help lift it off by hand would seem like a good idea. lol

Re: How to lift motor?

SleekWolf,
I never wanted to spend that money for a stupid lifting ring either, especially if you are probably only going to use that thing one time. In fact, I could not even find a lifting ring at the time, and I needed it right away. Here is what I did, and it worked well for me.

Do you have any HEAVY chain? I made a simple chain cradle and bolted the heavy chain to my flywheel with the correct hardened bolts and washers. I had a simple come-along attached to the rafters of my garage and lifted that 150 Merc right off. In fact, I left it hanging on the rafter hoist while I prepared the new boat for the engine swap. I am sure the same thing can be done with an automotive engine hoist as well. I figured that if the rafters can hold a Ford 351 Cleveland motor, it surely can hold a Merc. 150 HP Engine....and it did.

Re: How to lift motor?

I took off my 40 HP Yamaha with a chain fall. It lifts 2000 pounds. I know this is not exactly the same as what you are doing but it might work for you. Of course it would require the $30 lifting bracket. My Yamaha has the lifting bracket built in.

Yep, that's the way to do it. Hang an expensive 350 lbs on 2 5/16" bolts, and see what kind of wierd forces you can put on the flywheel flex plate while you're at it.

Re: How to lift motor?

error on this, you will use it more then once, it also pulls the flywheel without wrecking it

http://www.amazon.com/Mercury-Mariner-Flywheel-Puller-Lifting/dp/B002L2HNDW/ref=pd_sbs_auto_1

don't even begin to work on outboard without it, you will spend more in gas trying to rig up crap

That's exactly what I got. Don't be penny-wise and pound-foolish. :( It's a tool, you may need to use it another day. Also doubles as a flywheel puller.

This is the safest tool to use IMO, motors are heavy as hell, an injury due to trying to save $35 would be awful.
