This is an interesting email I just got regarding locking your car doors, just wanted to pass it along so hopefully nobody else gets victimized:

How to Lock Your Car and Why

I locked my car --- as I walked away I heard my car door unlock I went
back and locked my car again three times. I looked around and there
were two guys sitting in a car in the fire lane next to the store..
When I looked straight at them they did not unlock my car again.

How to lock your car safely -

While traveling, my son stopped at a roadside park. He came back to
his car less than 4-5 minutes later and found someone had gotten into
his car, and stolen his cell phone, laptop computer, GPS navigator,
briefcase.....you name it...

He called the police and since there were no signs of his car being
broken into - the police told him that there is a device that robbers
are using now to clone your security code when you lock your doors on
your car using your key-chain locking device..

They sit a distance away and watch for their next victim. They know
you are going inside of the store, restaurant, or bathroom and have a
few minutes to steal and run.

The police officer said to manually lock your car door-by hitting the
lock button inside the car, that way if there is someone sitting in a
parking lot watching for their next victim it will not be you.

When you hit the lock button on your car upon exiting...it does not
send the security code, but if you walk away and use the door lock on
your key chain - it sends the code through the airwaves where it can
be stolen. Something totally new to us...and real.

Be aware of this and please pass this note on...look how many times we
all lock our doors with our remote...just to be sure we remembered to
lock them....and bingo someone has our code...and whatever was in the
car...can be stolen.

Lost our remotes for the Jimmy years ago. I think the dog may have eaten one of them.

The snopes review is right on, 'code hopping' as it is termed, means billions of random codes which would take a long long time to guess (or it could be your first guess, as is the case in any random act). The same technology is used in bank security where employees who use remote access are given a fob or credit card sized number generator which coicides with a synchronized generator on the other end. You must type in the number as your login for access. If the social security card (or driver's license) were replaced with this, identity theft would become impossible.

If, however, you wish a real scare and own a Ford product from the 90's (may still work today, haven't tested it in years) and have an entry keypad. A person need only random press buttons until it unlocks, pops the trunk, etc, as the computer doesn't reset after an invalid number, it remembers all numbers pressed and will eventually activate. Longest it ever took me on a completely unknown vehicle was 30 seconds. One unlocked and popped the trunk within a few seconds. Almost takes longer to say "Open, says me."

or you can drive a jeep, manual locks on both sides and the back, and even if you do the run around and lock them, they can still unzip the top and take your stuff, or if they are really malicious, they can cut into it and steal whatever they want, and put you out the cost of the top-didn't think about that one before buying it

Advise from an ex car thief.

If a person wants into your car, it will take less then 20 seconds. If you have a good quality alarm, it will take three tries (set if off three times, and it will bypass that circuit thinking it is a fault). Easy way to get your car is called a ?tow truck?. In other words if a thief wants it he?ll get it.

Insurance is the best thing, followed by LoJack. LoJack has put a few people in jail.

Two problems with OnStar, one is that they only track a stolen vehicle for 24 hours after it is reported (I know this from experience when my GMC was taken). Second problem is that it only takes removing one fuse, and the complete system is useless. It is obvious you have OnStar, because of the extra antenna on the roof.

This has been around for some years now, also applies to garage door openers. and anything else that transmits a code.
If its out there someone can see it......

Our jeep is "NAKED" during the summer. No doors, top. etc.

When we bought it the salesman just said not to have anything in the Jeep you would miss if it was taken.
Like anything else in this world. If you have it, someone wants it.

The garage door opener code is easy to steal. My ford has it built in. I set it in program mode and push the opener. From now on the opener in the ford opens my garage. What's to stop me from sitting outside your house with my ford in program mode to steal you opener code.
