Re: how to measure short or long shaft?

The long shaft 9.5 has a 5" extension bolted between the gearcase and the midsection. The standard is 15", model #MQ-12. The long is 20" model #MQL-12.

You can make the MQ-12 a 20" with an extension kit.

Long shafts have a 5" extension in the middle (easy to spot). So it is either a 15" short shaft or a 20" extended long shaft. Measure from where it sits on the transom down.

Down to where though. I've wondered about this measure myself. Is the five and ten inch extension an OMC solution or do other manufactures do the same thing to achieve a long shaft? Rick.

Measure down from the top of the transom (or the inside of the mounting bracket) to about an inch or so above the cavitation plate above the prop.

if that's round about 15" its a standard shaft (OMC didn't call them short shafts)

If its about 20" it is a long shaft

( an extra-long shaft motor would be 25")

A few engines do not have the extension piece but have different gear cases

dont know about other makes but the measurement is the same near enough)
