You'll have a very hard time getting poly to stick to epoxy.. basically you'll need to use a rough sanding to get a decent mechanical bond between the poly and epoxy, and it still won't be very good.

Use epoxy if you can... I found a cheap brand on ebay (polymer composites) that's a 1:1 mix system and is almost as cheap as polyester resin - it's about $50 a gallon including shipping. So far I've had no problems with it.

Thank you Erik!In my country epoxy is even cheaper,so the difference in price is not really an issue ,but should I have any concerns about eventual aging(cracks) due to sun light or stress on hull when riding in choppy waters?

Epoxy isn't normally ultraviolet resistant without special additives. You will need to protect it somehow - either with paint, vinyl decking, carpet (which some people here don't like) or some other light blocking surface.

That same manufacturer I mentioned makes an opaque epoxy resin that can be used as a gelcoat (it has UV protective additives) so something similar might make a good topcoat for you.

Bare epoxy will be slippery, however, especially when wet, so it might be simplest to use a deck paint and add some nonskid powder to it wherever you want a rough surface.

Some people here are also using rino-liner, which is a rubbery nonskid coating that's meant for use in the back of open trucks to protect their cargo beds. It's common in the US at auto supply stores, so maybe there is something similar there.

Re: How to proceed?

have you considered another alternative? Look up ultratuff decking paint. It is used for everything from concrete to wood metal and fiberglass. Used in high volume public swimming pools for tracktion and wear.

www.ultratuff.net

Just check it out. My co-worker used it on the deck of his pontoon boat. easy to clean, durable, waterproof, and comfortable to walk on. Just thought I'd give an alternative. Good luck.
