How to protect OB motor from theft

I've enjoyed reading various posts in iBoats forums about protecting trailers from theft, but have found little regarding how to protect an outboard motor from getting ripped off. There appear to be all sorts of devices out there for trailers, but what can one use for motors?

What is a Tasha avatar? I tried to look it up and got a bunch of naked ladies. Then I put the word avatar next to it and didn't get anything that would scare a thief away. Am I missing something here?

There is a steel square tube that fits over the hand tighten bolts. That is better than a chain and lock.

An avatar is that little picture by a person's handle, or screen name. It can be any picture. Tasha is the Siberian Husky in Tashasdaddy's avatar.

Actually Bass Pro Shops, Cabella's and any other major Sporting Goods stores sell a Locking bar to secure the Motor Clamps, where you tighten the motor to the boat. I suppose it depends on the size of motor because some motors are bolted to the transom. You never did say what size of motor you have and are wanting to secure. I simply bought a Large enough Master Padlock to go through the holes and locked my motor to the boat that way. It worked for me for about 42 years and on three different motors, a 6 HP Mercury, 6 Hp Johnson and a 15Hp Johnson. I did that on three different boats.

Hey Tasha's dad, hate to rain on your parade, but that's one of the most lovable, relaxed, and non-barking breeds of dogs I know of......at least our's is.

Dog dies, need another. Wife goes to the Humane Society to get one. Goes into the kennel and must have been a hundred dogs barking and climbing the fence and raising a ruckus......cept 1. Beins we don't like yappin mutts that yap just to yap, wife wastes no time in selecting the one who just sits and looks.

But our's is not pure bred like yours. Seems a German Shepherd got involved somehow. We love her.

On thieves, if you have a determined thief he will get it if he wants it regardless. About all you can do is deter him by making it too much trouble to steal......let him go find an easy target.

when mine barks i know to see why. no one gets in or near the back yard, she will be inside, and go running out. she loves those boats.

Very true.

I've heard that taking the motor hood off also prevents theft. One needs it and would think it's inoperative and or hard to replace.

Just cover the motor with a vented plastic bag.

Like I said earlyer I use the Abby security system. This works great for both boats weather they are in the water or on the trailer. (Don't mess with the *****'s ride... She luvs to go bye.. lol.lol..She does watch'em like a hawk just in case you may try to sneak out without her.). An added bonus is un-wanted solicitors just bye-pass the property and go to the neighbors instead. Nothing like lots of sharpe teeth saying go away..

Just haven't figured out yet how to hook her into the phone system to discourage the tele-marketers...

As I posted a while earlier, this summer kids on jetskis would go around unhooking the motors, drop them in the water, then come back later with scuba gear to retrieve them. Little buggas eh.

My stuff isnt very expensive so its hardly worth stealing. I use a steel cable. Keeps the casual thief from casually walking away with my tank too.

Re: How to protect OB motor from theft

There is no way I'd ever leave any of my smaller outboards attached when parked, it's not that bad of a neighborhood but I think if I offered the temptation, someone would take it.

Most of mine are older motors but that don't seem to matter.
My best protection here is my alarm in the garage and my rifle with an LED and scope. If I hear or see anyone in or about the yard, the passing red dot usually is all the deterrent they ever need.

The neighborhood has several cops and lots of gun collectors and a few half crazy ex vets, so most stay pretty well clear of this area. I have always been fond of the signs that say "Don't mind the dog, beware of the owner".

I only had one incident here, years ago, with an attempted theft. The potential thief went away empty handed but was kind enough to leave me a complete set of Craftsman tools complete with tool box and the remains of a Chevy Nova that wasn't much good after we got done with it. It made good target practice for about a week! ..Owner last seen jogging full speed heading due west through a field full of sticker bushes. I think he was after the wheels on my car but who knows, he didn't stick around after the first warning rang out.
