I know location plays a big part in value of a motor. Im in NY on Long island...being an ISLAND there are a lot of boats here. I have a 1980 80 hp Merc, and Im trying to place a value on IT alone to price a boat Im about to sell.... any ideas?

You can go to NADA.COM and look up book value but doesn't mean you can get that much. But it's a good starting point

OK, a 30+ year old motor, in a salt environment....it has no value. Unless it was replaced, the wiring will be shot. The exhaust cover may be corroded thru, and those are the usual issues. If it has compression, spark and the gear oil appears to be good, it has nominal value (~$100?)

I agree with Chris, but it's your motor. If it weren't a salt water motor, I'd agree that it would be worth around $500---but it is.....
Then again, you may find someone that will give you $1000.

Re: how to put VALUE to a motor

Ill tell you this.....when i BUY a motor, I want to buy it from one of you guys. lol but when selling, please Shhhhhhhhhh! dont tell any one your opinions! :)

I know there is often a difference in ASKING and SELLING price..... But what Im seeing here on long Island is a moot like mine (1980 80hp Merc) is going for $500-$1000. I will definitely use this new information when I go to negotiate my next boat purchase!
Thanks

do you see them selling for that? or you see people asking that...
I have seen motors on craigslist for over 5 years. I can't believe people will invest that much in listing and re-listing.
There was one here I wanted to buy just so I didn't have to look at the ads anymore.

ebay is the valuation king. ebay determines the value of all goods in the free world, but you have to look at completed listings, not asking prices. Then you can adjust for local market conditions +/-

Ed, about 3 years ago I replaced my '77 merc 1500 with a '93 Merc 135HPV6. The motor was in perfect shape and I paid $1000. For a grand today, I would expect a 90s motor

Its free to list on Craigslist. They make their money on job ads.

If the only thing you can get on Long Island is saltwater motors then you will pay a different amount than someone who can get fresh water motors all day will pay.

Re: how to put VALUE to a motor

Thats about right Chris1956...Thats the range I see. 90' and up its closer to $1000+ but even a good running 80's is hitting $500-$1000. The motor I have has a great prop on it....a new Alum prop is $100. Parting out even a NON-RUNNING motor would bring $500 easy if you had the time to find buyers (prop, ignition, lower unit, fly wheel, carbs, controls, cover etc)...this happens to be in great shape and runs fantastic and has compression in all 4 cyl over 125 psi and within 5 psi of each other.

I think its easy to say a 1980 80hp is only worth $100 when you have a new $10,000 on the back of your boat. Im telling you, around here if your LUCKY you can score a motor for $600 and get out on the water and be reliable. There are always your "rube Goldberg specials that I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.... but a maintained, stock motor..... $500 is the lowest retail youll find. Its actually often cheaper to buy a boat, motor and trailer for $500....drop the boat for $50 at the Dumps..sell the trailer for $300 and you have the motor for $100 or $200. Take that motor OFF the boat, and its $500+ ( providing its running and in good shape of course)

Re: how to put VALUE to a motor

I know one thing, if that "Saltwater Rule" was really in place, we'd never find motors down here. They're ALL salt-water motors, lol. You fresh water guys.....I think the "bank" has gotten to you or something.

Outboards are ALL about condition and care. The "range" that you're seeing is predicated on how the thing was taken care of. $1000 is a fair asking price if you've done what needs to be done to the motor, i.e. flushed it after use, changed impeller annually, etc. etc. Again, that doesn't mean you'll get it, but it's by no means "way out in left field". Plus, the motor will bring more if you pull it off the boat. For some reason, regardless of where it's been used, stand alone outboards bring a higher price than ones on a hull/trailer. I assume it's because of the hassle of pulling it, etc., but if I'm shopping to buy a new motor, I look first at "packages" and try to find a good motor on a bad hull. Haul the hull to the dump, sell the trailer, and use the motor. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
