Re: How to raise transom..

I guess you didn't read post #9. Everything I said was for a Fiberglass boat, NOT a Tinner, EXCEPT for the plywood. That was true for any boat. The Birch Plywood, I guarantee is NOT exterior glue. As long as you ALWAYS predrill and coat the holes and any and all mechanical fasteners with Epoxy it should still last many years. Epoxy has NO UV protection so for even longer life, I'd recommend either coating it with a couple of coats of Marine Spar varnish with UV protectants or Rustoleum Professional Oil Based Paint.

I'd already written you back and posted before reading further.. After installing the transom, I shot it with a coat self etching zinc primer.. Then applied 2 coats of Behr semi gloss oil based paint.. Then installed the aluminum plates and "end cap", and did the same for them, even painting the stainless steel bolt heads, nuts and washers.. And when the wood finally goes, another 10 days or so re-manufacturing a new one----cut to the correct height (fingers crossed)..!!

Re: How to raise transom..

Thanks for your suggestion and photo, Nathan.. I like the idea of the engine still "resting" on something even if it's not really "rock solid attached".. I have 4 engine bracket bolt holes (2 on each side of bracket, 1 above the other) but they are maybe 1/2 apart.. I could be wrong here but, I don't see how drilling all 4 holes would be such a good idea, due to the fact, there's barely any room / space between them.. (2, 1/4" holes for the bolts with only 1/2" wood between them).. .. .. Or, is it a good idea to use all 4 holes..??

Re: How to raise transom..

Hi JignGrub,

Thanks for your suggestion also.. I think that's a great idea and would work.. I'd rather use a 4" sheet metal screw to hold the bar in place though.. Get into the "meat" of the transom a little farther.. But, all said, it goes threw me like a "dose of the salts" to have to "scab" the transom after building her from scratch.. (re-did the entire boat, interior, exterior, casting / sleeping deck----she's a beauty..).. I guess---such is life..!!

They put 4 holes there for a reason, you should use all 4.

Makes sense.. Any suggestion for a "washer", so to speak..?? Maybe like my friend had suggested, to get a 1/4" piece of stainless, 4"tall by 8" wide, or so..?? Then washers and nuts on top of that..

If you can find 4" by 1/4" dia. Stainless sheet metal screws or lag bolts go for it, but an inch and a half penetration will be plenty... you won't be able to knock it off with a sledge hammer.

Post up some pics of this jewel you're working on, I'd like to see them.

Re: How to raise transom..

Hi Jasoutside,

Thank you for reassuring me that I'm not alone in this whole, "I swear this yardstick says 22"----you try measuring it..!!" thing.. I was starting to think that maybe I'd bought some weird, freaky, factory screw-up..

So what was your Evinrude mounted on and did you have to "customize / rebuild" your transom to accomodate the extra 2"..?? If so, what did you do to correct it..??

Yah man, I kept thinking I was holding the tape measure at wierd angles or wrong spot or something. Nope, 22" all day long.

Well, I'll be using mine as a kicker for my Islander. The bracket I'm building will need to be custom to match up with my swim platform. All yet to be built in the not so distant future.

I'll also be using it on my 14' Mirro Craft with a short (15") transom just like you are. I'll be working out a "jack plate" of sorts for that (winter 2013) as I want to keep the transom original. If/when I get more than two pennies to my name I'll buy a short shaft engine to put on it.

Cheers man!:watermelon:

There are 4 holes, but only 2 are used, they are situated so the motor can be raised or lowered as needed by changing between the two holes, that's why I asked earlier if the motor sat down on the transom. It makes no difference if the motor sits directly on the transom or is raised up off it, the clamps (or bolts, whichever the motor has) can be positioned at the very top of the transom and work fine. This whole thing isn't really that hard and is a minor and simple adjustment.

Re: How to raise transom..

Finally-----"light at the end of the tunnel"..!! An update on this "good woman gone bad with my charge card"..

After a $300.00 and $150.00 quote to have a 2"x2 1/2"x 1/8th" aluminum bar with 14"x10", 3/16th aluminum plates (inside and outside of transom) welded and slid over top of the transom end cap, I found a "salt of the earth" local welding / fabricating shop that's been here for 25+ years..

An hour and a half and $60.00 later, ready to prime, paint and mount..!! Well, remounted engine this morning and the cavitation plate is 1/2" above the bottom of the boat and I couldn't be more thrilled in knowing that this "transom issue" is finally winding down and coming to an end.. (I began this "problem child" back on the 20th of Oct, 2012..)..

After addressing a few small issues on the rest of the boat tomarrow, I'll be launching her Sat. early morning with the old, chewed up 10.3 x 12 pitch prop, just to compare to my memory of how she ran before.. Will then re-prop at the boat launch with a new 10 x 14 pitch and hit the water again..

I'm hoping and praying I'm completely blown away by the raised transom / engine while she's running the old prop.. Wih no other issues raising their ugly heads----cavitation, excessive porposing, weird chine-walking, etc..

And keeping my fingers crossed that the extra 9 1/4 lbs. added by the new work doesn't have my "nose in the air" when idling, trolling, running at cruising rpm's, etc..

Re: How to raise transom..

A more appropriate song, I can't think of..!! Great suggestion..

On the bright side, after transom, teak floorboards and anchor locker, Glu-Vit and Marine-Tex, primer, paint, stainless steel hardware, epoxy and full blown deck installed, at least I have VERY nice templates to copy off of..!! Instead of the 74 days it took me to build, I'm guessing it'll only take 60 to rebuild next time..!! But don't quote me on that.. Way back in October, I thought it would only take 2 weeks, a month tops.. (and get this----"for right around $500.00.." .. .. Yeeaahhh.. Riiiggghhht..!!)

Re: How to raise transom..

Yeah, I thought the same thing when I switched my Tracker over from carpet to vinyl:
http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...ir/97-tracker-pro-deep-v-facelift-509163.html

... 9 weeks later I was finished. I could've cut that time in half had I thrown away the old decking and bought new, but I couldn't bring myself to throw away the kiln dried CCA pressure treated plywood that was factory installed. Sooo, I had to sand all of the old carpet glue off and fir-in/resize all of my hatch openings to compensate for the difference between the vinyl thickness and carpet thickness. If I ever have to redo it I'll probably retire the CCA and use MDO instead.
