How to re-assemble an 8 HP Johnson ... ?

I took my 1991 8 HP Johnson to a local repair shop. When he went to change the impeller, he found the drive shaft was broken. Two months later, after I finally found a used drive shaft for that motor, he is too busy to work on it.
I've got the motor back in my garage. The lower unit is removed. I need to get an impeller and key, and put the thing back together.
I'm a mechanical engineer who likes to build and repair things, but I've never worked on an outboard motor before.
Is this something I can do myself?
Is it a 2 hour job or a 20 hour job?
Special tools needed?

Thanks for any help or suggestions !!

I'm certain you will find the job well within your ability. I would suggest you go on ebay and find an original OMC service manual for your specific model and year. Either Johnson or Evinrude will work fine. It is more like a 2 hour job but twenty hours to type the instructions. Depending on how pulled apart it is there should be no special tools needed. I don't think a key comes with the impeller so make sure to order that as well. Best of luck. Rick.

It may be a small item, but if he did not return all the parts, impeller key or even the bolts, I would go back & SUGGEST he do so.

Go to Shop.Evinrude.com, have your model# handy and look up the parts diagrams. This will give you a good idea of what you need and what goes where.
