I took my 1991 8 HP Johnson to a local repair shop. When he went to change the impeller, he found the drive shaft was broken. Two months later, after I finally found a used drive shaft for that motor, he is too busy to work on it.
I've got the motor back in my garage. The lower unit is removed. I need to get an impeller and key, and put the thing back together.
I'm a mechanical engineer who likes to build and repair things, but I've never worked on an outboard motor before.
Is this something I can do myself?
Is it a 2 hour job or a 20 hour job?
Special tools needed?
Thanks for any help or suggestions !!
