How to recoil 56 johnson

Hello,
I am trying to replace the spring, in a recoil, for my 56 johnson 15hp.
I can install the spring and engage the pin on the sheave, but I don't know how many turns are required to preload the spring. One article says my rope should be 72 1/4 inches long. Is this correct because mine is much shorter.
When I preload the spring and rope , the spring slips off the pin on the outer eye (when the rope retracts). Does this mean my rope is to short and I would have to be winding my spring much tighter. Anyone know approx how many turns would be required to preload the spring ( I'm guessing 5 or 6 with a 72 1/4 in rope).

Any suggestions would be welcome .

Turn the pulley till it gets pretty tight to turn .Then use some visegrips to hold the pulley from moving .Feed the rope through the pulley hole and out the eyelet hold the rope and unclamp the visegrips it will wind it up for you adjust length from there by moving knot at the handle.

Thanks, I know but should the rope be the 72 1/4 inches 7/32 dia.?

If so then I am not winding the spring tight enough!

I have always just used standard lawn mower starting rope works fine I never worry about the length just wind the spring tighter and let it rewind as much rope as it will take .

Ok , but when the rope rewinds right near the end the spring slips off the outer pin? Any Ideas? The spring is new.

get more tension on the spring at the end try and wind it a few more turns before installing the rope dont worry to much about the length as long as there is enough to start it .
