I bought a 13 ft Sea Nymph, with no registration in hand, just the reg. numbers on side. The data plate is useless because its all scratched up other than the model number and manufacturer. The registration on the side says its good until February 2015. The NY DMV wont give me any info on a prior owner so I can get it 100% legal before taking it out on the water. Also There are no Numbers for the HIN on the bow or transom areas at all. I'm new at the whole boating thing just starting out. any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

So no paperwork? And the seller doesn't have the papers? Did you get a bill of sale?

"just the reg. numbers on side". ? of the day becomes...... who was it last registered to? is that the same person who sold you the boat? If you have any friends who are cops...I'd reach out to them and have them run that reg# on the hull for a start.. do you have the boat serial #? have cops run that too... never a good idea to buy a boat without a title/reg paperwork........

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... You need a transferable registration, or title from whomever bought the sticker that's on it now,...

Without 1 or the other, you'll never register it in NY,...

If the PO has died, the executor of his estate can do the proper paperwork,...

I do have the bill of sale but it was never registered in that guy's name, it was the one before him.

they need to start putting people in jail who sell a boat they never transferred into their name.

because of lazy people who don't want to spend a few dollars paying the fees when they get the boat, people like you end up stuck with boats that are only good for lawn art or making flower beds out of them.

you are in for many headaches with this unless you can track down the last registered owner yourself and get him to transfer ownership to you. it can be done sometimes if they haven't moved away and are nice people.

I've been registering boats in NY since the 1960's. Worst place to try. You just bought a parts boat! Demand the seller give you your money back.....or, cut it up and sell the aluminum for scrap....or, sell it to someone with a private pond that wants a row boat.

NY will accept boats that are "homemade", but you'll need receipts for the materials of construction. Usually only works for wood boats.

BTW, the hull number is embossed in the aluminum on the outside of the transom. Look close, you'll find it.

It's also hidden somewhere else on the boat. He would have to contact the company to find out where. It's done if the boat is stolen and police need to find out who owns it.I accidentally found mine when i had a Starcraft Islander.
