In removing Remote Control ( Yamaha 704 Remote Control) two screws that hold one of the mounting brackets to the RC housing broke. Any suggestions on removing them?
One has a little nub, but not very likely that I can get a good grip on it. The other doesn't even have that.
I believe the housing is cast aluminum...
Start drilling with a left handed drill bit a size smaller than the screw. If you are lucky, it will catch it and unthread it. If not, you may have to re-tap it and replace the screws with stainless machine screws.
When you drill stainless steel, use a cobalt bit, low speed and lots of pressure. I have found that if you use a dremel with a cutting disc, you can use that to make an + in the top of the broken bolt and use that to center the bit.
i'll add to what MM says. keep the drill bit sharp. let the drill bit cut the SS. use lots of lub to keep it cool. don't let the broke screw and bit get hot. it's self defeating and no work will be accomplished. go slow. ya get one chance at this. i had to drill three ss screws on my last drive. the water pocket cover bolts. same as you. ss mounted into cast aluminum. ya start to slide off the screw and the soft cast aluminum will suck ya right off your broke screw and you'll be done. perhaps make a jig of steel to help guide you. i used 1/2'' steel plate using a water pocket cover gasket as a template. i used my jig on two of the three i did. 2 holes i ended up having to drill oversize and helicoil back to proper size screw. the third one i did i drilled it so straight that all the was left of the ss screw was the threads. i thought i could just tap it and be done. but the tap jambed on the screw threads about half way down the hole. so much so i thought i'd break the tap. you bread a tap off in the hole and you'll be done too. at that point for me. i oversized the third hole too and helicoiled it back to proper size.
