Do I tap the bearings side to side to loosen them before taking them out? I've been told that the inside moves forward a they fill with grease. The inside on mine seem to be cocked to one side (on a slant) and not seated evenly. If I keep pushing in the greaee, will they even out? What to do?

Yup- whack them on all 4 sides and they'll loosen up. Use a rubber mallet or block of wood.
As far as the grease level, there's a small relief hole that'll start spewing grease when they're full. To even up the innards, just wiggle the grease fitting with the gun attached.
