Boy, I feel stupid asking this, but I just don't want to break my new shower sump/bilge. Basically, the sump is a plastic box with an auto-float bilge pump in it. The problem is that it has 3 or 4 inlets for different size hoses - from shower, sink or whatever need to be pumped out the thru-hull. Each inlet has a "cap" molded into it so I assume you somehow knock off the cap or cut for the ones you will be using. This leaves the unit sealed as the other inlets are not opened and remain capped.

Here's a link to a similar one.

I can't knock the caps off as they are molded into the connection fitting as best I can tell. How do I get them off? Cut them? That sure seems like a stupid design.

There is no secret here and yes, it is a very cheap design. You just cut off the ends of the nipples you want to use. The idea is to give you an option for 2 tube sizes on most of them.

They make a tool to cut the ends off, but most just use a hack saw or a utility knife. Don't try to drill the ends unless you can ream them out with no lip left that would interfere with the flow.

OK, thanks. Seems like such a stupid way to do it.... I guess I figured I was missing something.

Is there some kind of check ball valve so when the sump goes off it doesnt pump in the sink etc?
