Re: how to remove lower unit on a 1954 evinrude fleetwin 7.5
About new rings, or pistons: One thing to remember is even if the piston skirts show scoring as viewed with the bypass and exhaust covers removed is that if the cylinders do not have serious scoring ABOVE the ring travel area of the bore, the compression tests good, there is no reason to rebuild if it starts and runs well and does not have excessive piston slap. One thing to put this in perspective is that the rings have end gap; some engines have up to .090" end gap depending on the knock pin size, and this is not enough to cause any detrimental blowby...so why sweat a small .010" deep score mark if the engine runs well? Although it is nice to see a perfect bore with crosshatching, indicating no problems, minor scoring does not always dictate a top end overhaul. With older engines, where parts are made from pure unobtainium, you have to make do as is.
