Hello, I bought a 1989 Force 50 last fall. Test ran fine, pumped water fine. However when installed on boat and tested today no water pumping. Probable impeller bad. Question? how do you remove the lower unit to replace impeller. I see the bolts but not familiar on shift linkage on this model. (Had 59 Evinrude before) Any help is much appreciated.

BTW I am ordering the service manual!

Hi Terry
There is a turnbuckle on the shift rod you need to disconnect. This turnbuckle is located between the exhaust housing (motor leg) and the swivel barcket. With the motor turned to port, you should be able to see it on the starboard side. You will need to readjust the shift after reassembly. You may also want to service the thermostat as well. This will be located under a cover with four screws on the head.

Re: How to remove lower unit

Thanks alcan for the response. Got lower unit off no problem. Got impeller out and found problem. Small shards of rubber from the impeller disintigrating. I think a small chunk from the plastic inlet screen on lower unit came off and got into pump.. Waiting for new impeller AND Inlet screen..

T

Terry, I have the same motor 1990 model year, I consider myself handy, do you think I can handle replacing the impeller on this unit. What other parts will I need to replace besides the impeller, for instance any gaskets or seals? Any special tools needed for the job?
Thanks
Joe

Joe, get;
a bottle of outboard gear lube,
a bottle of Gojo or other grease-eating hand cleaner,
a bundle of wypalls or shop rags,
an oil drain pan,
An impact screwdriver (available at auto parts stores, and you can't do this without it.
a package of "Mercury plug gaskets/lower unit" S&J # 02802. These come in a box of five....TWO are required for each drain/inspect/refill----Tell me that wasn't planned by some bean-counter !
Drain/inspect/refill the l/u.
If it's not contaminated, you're done. If it is,You may need to install new seals ,and you picked the right time to fix it (while you have the l/u off).
It's easier to do this before you drop the l/u. but if you got it off, don't re-install without inspecting that.
Clymer publication,#B751-3 "Force Outboard Repair Manual/ 4-150HP (includes L-Drives), 1984-1996", would be a requirement if it were my motor. The following link may also be of some help. And BTW, welcome to iboats.
LOWER UNITS 101
