I am trying to remove my lower unit for service. IT is a 70s model 85hp evinrude outboard motor. I have removed 5 screws that hold the lower unit on. I am having trouble getting to the nut that holds the shift linkage together at the powerhead. Do you guys have any tips on how to remove this. There really is no room to get a wrench to the bolt. at the linkage. Also should the vent hole at the lower unit have a rubber oring on the screw to keep water from getting in the oil?

Re: how to remove lower unit.

Try using a 3/8 or 1/4" drive ratchet, extension, and universal joint with the proper socket for the shift rod linkage bolt.May be easier to access if it is in the reverse position.

Thye lower unit vent screw as well as the drain screw should have a seal.If yours is the type with an undercut on the back side of the screw head ,it takes an "O" ring.If its a flat fit from screw shoulder to seat ,it takes a seal washer.

My lower unit required two nylon washers to seal the screws from leaking oil out or water in.

Yep, long extensions and universal joint socket is the way to go.
